Helping Kids Make the Grade
Enhancing Success in School for Children and Youth in Care Regional Agreement
On September 10, 2010 the Deputy Ministers for Alberta Education and Alberta Children and Youth Services (ACYS) formally signed the Enhancing Success in School for Children and Youth in Care – Provincial Protocol Framework (PPF).
Children and youth in provincial care often have lower grades and higher drop-out rates than the general population. The framework is an initiative intended to help foster kids get better grades and stay in school longer.
The PPF guides the work of those involved with children and youth in care to support school success. All stakeholders, including the student and caregivers, will work together to develop relationships, share information, make joint decisions to plan for and support school success.
The PFF also provides a framework for Regional Agreements (RA) that can be customized to allow for local partners to meet localized needs. The Regional Agreement for those children and youth being served by the Edmonton and Area Child and Family Services Authority (CFSA) was enacted in February, 2011 by the CFSA and 13 School Divisions within the region. These are:
- Edmonton Public Schools
- Edmonton Catholic Schools
- Elk Island Public Schools
- Elk Island Catholic School District
- St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic School District
- Parkland School Division
- Evergreen Catholic Regional Division
- Grande Yellowhead Public School Division
- Black Gold Regional Division
- Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools
- St. Albert Protestant School District
- Sturgeon School Division
- Conseil Scolaire Centre Nord
Starting in 2012 and each January after that, the regional agreement will be reviewed and stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide feedback to continue improving the support for kids in care.
